When I first arrived on the North Carolina Outer Banks I was driving across the Currituck Sound bridge as the sun was beginning to set over the sound and as I entered the community of Southern Shores I instantly knew I had arrived in paradise. The highway wound through the tall pines of Southern Shores surrounded on one side by the Currituck Sound and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. As I approached the hillcrest of Southern Shores, I could see the sun setting across the sound and I watched as the brilliant shades of red, yellow and blue radiated across a perfectly painted Outer Banks sky. I knew I was home.
As the community of Southern Shores appeared in the rear view mirror, I entered the beach at the hilltop in the famous town of Kitty Hawk where the Wright Brothers had launched air travel from a sand dune just a few miles down the road and the famous Wright Brothers monument now stands in honor of that historical day when flight was born. Ahead and behind this historical area lay the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the world. Just a few miles south you'll see the highest and largest sand dune on the East Coast as they reach to the sky. It is here on the famous Jockeys Ridge that you can see some of the most colorful kites and hang gliders in the world from the top of the dune line.
Stretching from the village of Corolla on the Currituck County Outer Banks to the Cape Hatteras National Seashore in Nags Head, the Outer Banks are flawlessly and thoughtfully preserved with just the right touch of commercial development. From the historical town of Kitty Hawk to the sand dunes of Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head the highway stretches about 16 miles bordered by the Currituck, Roanoke and Albemarle Sounds and the majestic Atlantic Ocean.
Just a few miles north from Southern Shores and a short drive on north old highway 12 and you feel like youve stepped back in time in the Town of Duck, North Carolina. The quaint shops are very popular and the homes are highly demanded as vacation rentals. After a short drive through Duck and you pass by the picturesque oceanfront community of Pine Island just before entering the lovely community of Corolla. The world renowned Reese Jones golf course of the Currituck Club stretches along the Currituck Sound between Pine Island and Corolla and the original Currituck lighthouse remains tall and stately in Corolla.
Just over the bridge west of Nags Head across the Roanoke Sound and you enter the famous Roanoke Island, land of our beginnings and the town of Manteo and fishing village of Wanchese. Here you find the world famous outdoor drama The Lost Colony which is the story of the landing of the first colonists in 1587 and the birth of our nation's first child, Virginia Dare. You can find so much to do here where you can see Festival Park, Elizabethan Gardens, the NC State Aquarium, the replica of the ship the colonists sailed on to America as well as the trendy shops, boutiques and restaurants.
Every community on the Outer Banks of North Carolina is charming and unique each in a different way. The town of Sothern Shores with homes nestled in the pines of the maritime forest surrounded by the sound and Atlantic Ocean, the town of Duck and the village of Corolla with majestic homes that are like taking at tour of timeless beauty.
The towns of Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills are where history and giant sand dunes meet. The town of Nags Head is where the charm of the old styles catch up with the new and the town of Manteo, land of our beginnings, is where our ancestors first settled.
